It’s Already Friday!!!
Today we’re going to share some general “fun facts” about our whole team. Enjoy!
1. Our team ranges in age from 26-74! (Don’t try to guess!) That makes our average age 60.
2. Three team members are not a part of the HRBC family. Give them a big pat on the back!
3. For 50% of the group, this is the first visit to Port Sulphur, or anywhere on the gulf coast, for hurricane relief.
4. Four of our team are on their first EoE mission experience.
WOW!!! How time flies. It must go faster here in Port Sulphur than it does at home! We can’t believe our week is almost over. We’re working frantically to get Viola’s house sided. Our team is a well-oiled machine.
Remember Jason and John? Remember we told you they were doing electrical work on a house? Well, we haven’t forgotten about them!! They’ve still been a part of our team! They just find themselves going the opposite direction every morning. Rick, the construction coordinator, received a quote from a local electrician before our team came. The estimate was $11,000.00!!! John and Jason have snaked what feels like miles of wire throughout the stud walls of the home, installed 24 recessed light fixtures and installed a circuit breaker panel as part of their job. The homeowner has been so grateful that he’s cooked them a wonderful lunch everyday! These guys became good friends. It’s an experience none will forget — even after the sore muscles and tired bodies have rested!
You could tell it’s Friday at Viola’s house. The quote of the day says it all. “Is it BAD wrong? Or is it just wrong and we can cover it up?”
We hope you have enjoyed our “fun facts”, and shared in the mission with us. We are excited to share more about our time in Port Sulphur when we return. Thanks for praying for us throughout this week.
Catching Up!
We know you’ve been anticipating the “fun facts” for Thursday!!! So here they are:
1. This person flew as backseat weapons system expert during Vietnam.
2. This person’s grandson is headed to a National Robotics Championship in just a few weeks.
Have you ever been so excited, and so tired at the same time that you didn’t know which way to turn? That’s exactly the sentiment of our team as we say good-bye to Thursday!! Today was yet another day of installing Hardi-plank siding on Viola’s house. Our goal is to finish the house by the time we leave on Friday. It’s a lofty goal, and we will be so close!
We’ve learned some great lessons during our week together.
1. Teamwork makes things to much quicker.
2. Experts are a must! For instance, you teach 2 people exactly where to hold the planks in place while someone else nails. Then you repeat this process over and over and over and over ………. it doesn’t take long before those 3 people are experts at their jobs! They have figured out shortcuts and the best way to get the job done! We’ve had measurer-ers, cutters, scaffolding climbers, installers and bosses. Everyone will be coming home with a new area of expertise!!
3. Laughter is always the best medicine!! And we’ve had plenty of it this week!
Thursday evening Bob escorted the 6 women on the team into New Orleans. As you might suspect, they found a local seafood restaurant and ate well! It’s amazing how every team manages to find themselves at Cafe Du Monde before the end of their time in the city! And this group is no exception! Beignets for everyone!!!
Don, Jason and John remained in Port Sulphur this evening for some R&R. There’s a rumor that Don’s time was spent in a bot, on the water, line dangling in the water in search of the illusive fish or two. Hey! Everyone deserves a couple hours of downtime after the hard work that’s been accomplished so far this week!
It’s been another great day on mission in Port Sulphur. We are praying that you will give of your time, as we have, and join in the work here. It’s never too late!

Mid-Week Words
Team member “fun facts” for Wednesday: 1. Which lady has been fishing with two of the men on this team? Give yourself bonus points if you can guess which men! 2. In February, this man saw an alligator swim within 10 feet of the boat he was in.
Today found us continuing our siding project at Viola’s house. We’re getting real good at this stuff!! We were relieved that there was no blood or injury during our work today! However, we were to quickly learn that injury doesn’t have to accompany work. With no tools in motion, a gust of wind blew up some dust and trash sent an unknown foreign object under Laura’s glasses in into her eye!!! After a trip to the emergency clinic and some wonderful numbing eye drops, it was discovered that she has a bad scratch on her eye. Hopefully she will be back in circulation tomorrow. So add that to your prayer list for today!!
Several folks were invited to join us for supper at PSBC this evening. We were thrilled to have the owner of the home where we’re working, Viola, and her daughter and son-in-law, Pastor Paul and Carol, their son Jeremy and daughter Jean, Volunteer Coordinators Bruce and Erin LePoint all join us. Smiles were everywhere as food was shared and stories were told. The evening was complete with an old-fashioned sing-a-long. Our new friends wanted to stay as we shared some grand old hymns. Terri was at the piano and Jason was on bass. It was a worshipful experience.
Chuckle from today: The team wants it to be known that we arrived at the job site on time, and long before our construction leader. That just doesn’t happen often!!
The ladies decided the best medicine for Laura was a rousing game of Catchphrase. We do have a lot of quiet women on our team, so there was concern as to whether they would like this game. It took about 10 seconds for the laughter to begin — and it was non-stop til the very end! We laughed so hard, we cried, and that was soothing for Laura’s eyes!
Fun Fact Answers: 1. Terri Shea is the fisher-woman! She has fished with Don Hutcheson and John Stark. 2. John Stark was the one to have a close encounter with an alligator.
Tuesday News
“Fun Facts” to think about today: 1. Which team member is one of 11 children? 2. This team member has trouble distinguishing between a pod and an ipod! team members reading notes,
The team is growing more tired as the day gets long, but we are enjoying the generosity of those who fixed homemade meals for us. We would especially like to thank Patty Arrington, Sue Hurley, Pam Lohr, Dotty Shepard, Ann Cholewinski and our very own Jane Stark for delicious meals/desserts that are easy to fix after a long hot day of work.
We’ve learned that every team needs Freda Austin!!! She made homemade pepperoni rolls for the ride to PS, and French apple dumpling dessert since we arrived. Take away her hammer and give her a mixing bowl!!!
Number 1 quote of the day: “Well, at least the heads are right!” Spoken by a team member who wishes to remain anonymous, when referring to the nail gun being jammed, but the nails had been loaded on the correct side. Followed by a huge chuckle from our Construction Coordinator, Rick, saying ”Can you hear God saying, ‘Well at least I got the heads right!’”
Number 2 quote of the day: “We didn’t do it.” Spoken by everyone on the team, at one time or another. Seems no one wants to take the blame for the busted water line that leaves us without water in our bunkhouse.
Number 3 qote of the day: “NO!” Spoken loudly by Laura to Don when he tried to do anything. Apparently, Don was working too fast for Laura, so she put her foot down and made him listen up.
Bob got a little too up close and personal with a nail gun today. The edge of his finger came face to face with one of the nails!! There may have been some blood dripping, but he continued to work. Finally, they had to sit him down and do a little first aid. It seems Freda has a souvenir of Bob’s blood on her shirt. Hmmmmm……. we’ve seen folks with autographed mission t-shirts, but this might be taking it a little far!!
Somehow Jason and Terri managed to have enough energy to play basketball on Monday, and a little tennis on Tuesday. Don’t get excited, there isn’t a tennis or basketball court anywhere around. However, PSBC has a large concrete slab between 2 buildings that doubles as a sports “complex”. It’s amazing how creative you can get with the resources you have!!
Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts. And a special thanks to those of you who wrote encouraging cards and notes to us. You have no idea how refreshing it is to open a card from someone in our church family. When you encourage us and tell us how you’re praying for us, it’s a huge boost for the team.
Blessings to all!!
(Fun Fact Answers: 1. Freda Austin is the baby and 11th child in her family. 2. Don Hutcheson has been known to confuse these two very different sized items!!
Attention Gautier Alumni!!
You’ll be thrilled to know that we just happened to need gas when we were traveling through Gautier, MS. So Terri instructed us to pull of at an exit that has a BP gas station. Well, those of you that worked on the Simms home know exactly what BP station we’re talking about!!! So we took the opportunity to stop in at the Simms’ home. Jerry and his daughter had just come back from fishing. There was a huge cooler full of fish on the front porch. (Be sure to look at the photos when we get our photo gallery loaded in a few days.)
We pulled in the driveway, and Don got out first. When Jerry saw him, there was a brief second of confusion — then recognition!! Those boys shared the biggest hug you’ve ever seen!! It was as if they had known each other forever.
The house looks great. The yard is nice and green. Some of you will be happy to know that the carport is still very clean! The front entrance is very nice, and the driveway is brand new concrete. You would never know they had been devastated by a hurricane. If only we could say that about all the families we will encouter in Port Sulphur over the coming days.

Monday Happenings in PS
Let’s start with our team member “fun facts” for today. 1. He has a black belt in karate. 2. She is a bead-er, and has her own company called Beading Hearts. Some of the proceeds from her sales go to the American Heart Association. Ponder those facts while you read on ……..
Though we are only a team of 10, we were able to split up into 2 groups. We worked on 3 homes, finishing one.
Team 1 — Jason learned a lot from John. They are wiring an entire house — This will take all week! This house will hold 3 families when finished. They got to meet their homeowner. He will be cooking shrimp for their lunch tomorrow.
Team 2 — Finished hardi-planking one room and began the second. Rick, the construction coordinator…. was amazed at how quickly this team worked. Viola is the homeowner here. She traveled 45 minutes out of her way to deliver at least 7 dozen drinks to our team. Lots of pictures were taken, that we’ll share with you next week.
Other happenings of the day
…….. Somehow the van keys got locked inside the van!!! Unfortunately, the rental company only gave us one set. Luckily, the motor wasn’t running! Freda and Bob said prayers. Then we found out our fearless construction leader, the righteous Reverend Rick Kesterson, in a former life, learned the talents required to enter locked vehicles!! Thus again proving God works in mysterious ways.
……. Little did we know that we would have live music while we worked. Bob has been singing all day. It’s a lot of fun.
Fun Fact answers: 1. Jason Naggles is the black belt. Hopefully, he won’t have to use his skills this week! 2. Jane Stark is the bead-er. Her, and her husband John, are friends of David & Terri Shea. They are excited about joining HRBC on mission in PS. Jane makes beautiful beaded jewelry. We got to see her in action on the ride to PS!!

The Joy of Traveling
Eleven folks who didn’t know each other very well left the HRBC parking lot early Saturday morning. After 2 days of travel, and arriving at the destination in Port Sulphur, LA, they have learned a lot! Now it’s time to share some of the fun with you. They’ve learned very interesting facts about each other. So everyday you will get to see if you can match a team member with their interesting “fun fact”.
Let the play begin …… Which team member has a son that represents many of us in the Virginia General Assembly? If that one was too easy, try this one. Which team member chaperoned and led a 231 mile bicycle trip?
To help you out — both of these are ladies!! The ladies on the team are: Freda Austin, Laura Fowler, Julia Nixon, Lee Ann Perkins, Terri Shea and Jane Stark.
Now back to travel news ……. Saturday was not a good day for travel. It rained all day long. Traffic in Atlanta was awful for a Saturday. Don’t those people know they’re supposed to stay home when it’s rainy and cold?!!! But God was co-piloting all day long, and everyone stayed safe. After getting the results of the Final Four basketball game, everyone retired to their rooms for some much needed rest.
Sunday travel was much more pleasant. The sun was out and only 6 hours left. The first stop was the New Orleans airport to pick up 2 team members — Laura and Lee Ann.
Sunday afternoon found everyone moving into their new homes for the week at the bunkhouse at Port Sulphur Baptist Church. Old friends were greeted when returning team members were welcomed by Pastor Lynn & Nicole Rodrigue, Bruce & Erin LePoint and Rick & Melissa Kesterson. (You’ll hear more about these folks as the week progresses.) Dinner was at Ann’s restaurant. You must know that Ann’s is normally closed on Sunday. However, she graciously agreed to fix a local seafood dinner for the team. There was more food on those plates than you can imagine —– and deeeeelicious! We’re trying to figure out a way to hire her as the team chef!!!
Everyone settled in for an early bedtime. Tomorrow will be the start of some great work in Port Sulphur. Hopefully, there will be some famouse “quotes of the day” to share as the week progresses. Check back for the Monday news.
Blessings to all!
(Julia Nixon has a son in the General Assembly. Laura Fowler was the cyclist.)
